A note on the new macbooks: Late last year Apple released a new hardware and a CPU called the M1. While performance has been improved with the new CPU there have been challenges with this new architecture.
The Langley Schools Information System and Technology department has compiled a list of comparisons we’ve found while testing the new Apple hardware. We want to ensure that all staff are full aware of any possible problems, or challenges that may occur with this decision during the life of the device over the next 4 years.
- Windows based machines have faster access to new feature updates and wider support for Office 365 applications (e.g. Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, etc.)
- The Apple M1 CPU is not currently not supported by our District Anti-Virus and there are known vulnerabilities
- There are stability issues on the Apple M1 CPU with Adobe Creative Cloud and Microsoft Office 365 applications. These will subside as new versions are released for the M1 platform but there are no firm ETAs on resolutions
- The third-party application market for Windows 10 is more open and offers a larger selection of open source and freeware applications
- Windows 10 integrates and provides easier access to District enterprise systems (e.g. shared drives, printers, etc.)
- Windows 10 will work with Apple TVs via a district purchased and supported application called Air Parrot.
- Lenovo hardware has full HDMI, USB, and MicroSD card ports. These will all require a separate adapter with the MacBook Air.
- Lenovo hardware offers a touch screen feature
- Lenovo hardware has a built-in camera privacy shutter
- Lenovo hardware allow faster turn around for repair as it is more serviceable
